Sterling silver is a precious-metal alloy containing 92.5% pure silver. The remaining 7.5% is usually made up of other metals, which help make the silver stronger and more suitable for jewellery. Sterling silver offers a beautiful balance of elegance, durability and everyday wearability, making it a popular choice for gemstone jewellery.
Yes. Sterling silver is genuine silver. Pure silver is naturally quite soft, so it is combined with a small amount of other metals to improve its strength and durability. Sterling silver is commonly marked with “925”, indicating that it contains 92.5% pure silver.
Sterling silver can naturally tarnish when it reacts with substances in the environment. Moisture, humidity, perfumes, cosmetics and certain chemicals can contribute to tarnishing. Tarnishing is a natural reaction and does not mean your jewellery is fake or poor quality. With proper cleaning and care, sterling silver can be brought back to its beautiful shine.
Your Birth Gemstone
Discover the gemstone traditionally associated with each month of the year. Birth gemstones are a wonderful way to add personal meaning to jewellery, whether you’re choosing a piece for yourself or looking for a thoughtful gift. Explore each month below to learn more about the gemstone, its beautiful characteristics and the unique story behind it.
January’s birth gemstone is garnet, a gemstone admired for its rich colours and especially its deep red shades. Garnet has been treasured for centuries and is often associated with warmth, passion and protection. Although many people think of garnet as simply a red gemstone, garnet actually occurs in a fascinating variety of colours. Its natural sparkle makes it a beautiful choice for both classic and contemporary jewellery.
February’s birth gemstone is amethyst, the beautiful purple variety of quartz. Its colour can range from delicate lilac to deep violet, giving each gemstone its own distinctive character. Amethyst has been admired throughout history and was once considered a gemstone worthy of royalty. Today, it remains a popular choice for elegant jewellery and is often associated with calm, clarity and inner strength.
March’s birth gemstone is aquamarine, a member of the beryl family known for its beautiful blue to blue-green colour. Its name comes from the Latin words for “water” and “sea”, reflecting its tranquil ocean-like appearance. Aquamarine is loved for its fresh, luminous colour and makes an elegant choice for jewellery that feels light, graceful and timeless.
April’s birth gemstone is diamond, one of the most recognised and treasured gemstones in the world. Known for its exceptional brilliance and remarkable durability, diamond has long been associated with love, strength and enduring commitment. A fascinating fact about diamond is that it is the hardest naturally occurring mineral, making it particularly well suited to jewellery. While many diamonds are colourless, they can also occur naturally in a range of colours, including yellow, pink, blue and even green. Its timeless sparkle makes diamond a meaningful choice for both everyday elegance and special occasions.
May’s birth gemstone is emerald, a captivating green gemstone belonging to the beryl family. Its beautiful green colour can range from lighter shades to rich, intense tones, with the finest emeralds prized for their vibrant appearance. Emeralds often contain natural inclusions, sometimes referred to as a gemstone’s “jardin”, which is French for garden. These natural features can form part of the gemstone’s individual character and help make each emerald unique. With its fresh colour and unmistakable beauty, emerald has been admired for centuries and remains a classic choice for elegant jewellery.
June’s birth gemstone is pearl, a remarkable organic gemstone created inside certain molluscs. Unlike most gemstones, which are formed within the earth, pearls develop when layers of nacre build up around an irritant inside the mollusc. This gives pearls their characteristic lustre and soft, luminous appearance. Pearls can occur in a variety of colours, including white, cream, pink, golden and darker shades. Their graceful appearance has made them a timeless favourite in jewellery, particularly for those who appreciate an elegant and classic style. As a June birth gemstone, pearl also makes a thoughtful choice for birthdays and meaningful gifts.
July’s birth gemstone is ruby, a striking gemstone celebrated for its rich red colour and exceptional beauty. Ruby belongs to the corundum mineral family, the same family as sapphire, and its red colour comes from the presence of chromium. Rubies can range from vibrant pinkish-red to deep, intense red shades, with colour playing an important role in their appearance and value. A fascinating fact about ruby is that it is one of the hardest natural gemstones, making it a practical and beautiful choice for jewellery. With its bold colour and timeless appeal, ruby is a wonderful gemstone for anyone who wants a piece that makes a confident statement.
August’s birth gemstone is peridot, a distinctive gemstone recognised for its fresh yellowish-green to olive-green colour. Unlike many gemstones that can occur in several different colours, peridot is best known for its characteristic green shades. It is a variety of the mineral olivine and is one of the few gemstones that forms deep within the Earth’s mantle. Peridot has a bright, lively appearance that pairs beautifully with sterling silver, making it an appealing choice for jewellery with a fresh and elegant feel. Its natural green colouring also makes it an excellent option for anyone looking for something a little different from traditional gemstone colours.
September’s birth gemstone is sapphire, a gemstone admired for its beautiful colour, durability and timeless elegance. Although sapphire is most famously associated with rich blue shades, it can occur in a wide variety of colours, including pink, yellow, green and even colourless varieties. Blue sapphire gets its colour primarily from trace amounts of iron and titanium within the gemstone. Sapphire belongs to the corundum mineral family and is second only to diamond in hardness among naturally occurring minerals. Its combination of strength and beauty makes sapphire particularly well suited to jewellery that can be treasured for years to come.
October’s birth gemstone is opal, a fascinating gemstone famous for its beautiful play-of-colour. Depending on the type of opal, flashes of blue, green, yellow, orange, pink and other colours can appear as the gemstone moves in the light. This remarkable effect is caused by the interaction of light with the microscopic structure of the opal. Unlike gemstones that typically display one dominant colour, opal can appear to change as you look at it from different angles. This unique quality gives every opal its own personality and makes it an enchanting choice for jewellery lovers who appreciate individuality and natural beauty.
November’s birth gemstone is citrine, a beautiful variety of quartz known for its warm yellow, golden and honey-coloured tones. Its bright colouring gives citrine a naturally cheerful appearance that works beautifully in jewellery. Natural citrine is relatively uncommon, which makes genuine natural specimens particularly interesting to gemstone collectors and jewellery lovers. Each natural citrine can display its own subtle variations in colour and clarity, reflecting the conditions in which it formed. Its warm golden glow makes it a wonderful choice for November birthdays and a thoughtful gemstone for anyone who loves elegant jewellery with a touch of natural colour.
December’s birth gemstone is tanzanite, a captivating gemstone known for its beautiful blue to violet hues. Tanzanite is particularly fascinating because it is found in only one known commercial location in the world, near Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Its colour can appear different depending on the viewing angle and lighting, with shades ranging from blue to violet and sometimes showing subtle reddish or purplish tones. Tanzanite was first discovered in the 1960s and quickly became prized for its distinctive colour and rarity. Its sophisticated blue-violet appearance makes it an especially elegant choice for December jewellery and memorable birthday gifts.
Gemstones
Gemstones are naturally beautiful materials, each with its own colour, character and unique features. Because no two natural gemstones are exactly alike, slight differences in colour, clarity and inclusions can make every piece of jewellery special. Explore our answers below to learn more about gemstones and what makes them so fascinating.
A natural gemstone is a mineral, crystal or organic material that has formed naturally through geological or biological processes. Natural gemstones can vary in colour, clarity, size and pattern because each one develops under its own unique conditions. This natural variation is part of what makes gemstone jewellery so special. At Mayas Jewellery, gemstones are selected for their beauty and character, allowing you to enjoy jewellery with a natural element that is unique to each piece.
Gemstone colour is influenced by several factors, including the minerals and trace elements present during the gemstone’s formation. For example, different elements can create the beautiful colours found in gemstones such as emerald, ruby, sapphire and amethyst. Some gemstones can also display different colours depending on their structure or the way they interact with light. This is why gemstones can have such a fascinating range of shades, from soft and subtle tones to rich and vibrant colours.
Inclusions are natural features found inside many gemstones. They can appear as tiny crystals, lines, clouds, patterns or other internal characteristics formed as the gemstone develops. Rather than automatically being a flaw, inclusions can provide insight into a gemstone’s natural formation and can make each stone look different from another. Many gemstone lovers appreciate these natural characteristics because they add individuality and help give a gemstone its own personality.
No, natural gemstones can vary considerably in colour, clarity, size, cut and overall appearance. Because natural gemstones form under different conditions, each stone can have its own unique characteristics. Some may have more visible inclusions or slight variations in colour, while others may have greater clarity or a more intense colour. These differences are part of the natural beauty of gemstones and mean that every piece of jewellery can have its own individual character. At Mayas Jewellery, we appreciate these natural qualities and the uniqueness they bring to each gemstone.
Even gemstones from the same family can look different because each natural gemstone forms under its own unique conditions. Differences in mineral composition, trace elements, crystal structure and the environment in which the stone formed can influence its colour, clarity and appearance. The way a gemstone is cut can also affect how it reflects and interacts with light. This natural variation is one of the most interesting things about gemstones. It means that two stones of the same type can have their own distinctive appearance, making every piece of natural gemstone jewellery special.
Natural gemstone jewellery should be treated with care to help preserve its beauty and shine. We recommend removing your jewellery before bathing, swimming, exercising or using household cleaning products. It is also best to avoid exposing gemstones to perfumes, creams and other cosmetics whenever possible. When you are not wearing your jewellery, store each piece separately in a soft pouch or jewellery box to help prevent scratches. For cleaning, gently wipe your jewellery with a soft, dry or slightly damp cloth and avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive materials. Taking a little extra care can help your natural gemstone jewellery remain beautiful for years to come.
Jewellery Care & Maintenance
Taking proper care of your jewellery can help preserve its beauty and shine for years to come. Sterling silver and natural gemstones are beautiful materials, but they can be affected by moisture, chemicals, cosmetics and everyday wear. Below are some simple jewellery care tips to help you keep your favourite Mayas Jewellery pieces looking their best.
Sterling silver jewellery can be gently cleaned using a soft jewellery polishing cloth to remove everyday marks and restore its natural shine. For more delicate pieces, gently wiping the surface with a soft, clean cloth is often sufficient. Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh household cleaning products, as these can scratch the silver or affect the finish. If your jewellery features natural gemstones, take extra care when cleaning around the stones and avoid soaking the piece unless you know that the gemstone and setting are suitable for it.
Sterling silver can naturally tarnish over time when it reacts with substances in the environment. Moisture, humidity, perfumes, cosmetics and certain chemicals can contribute to tarnishing. Tarnishing is a natural reaction and does not mean that your jewellery is fake or poor quality. With regular care and gentle cleaning, sterling silver can be brought back to its beautiful shine. Keeping your jewellery clean, dry and properly stored can also help reduce the appearance of tarnish.
Keeping sterling silver jewellery dry and protected can help slow down tarnishing. We recommend storing your jewellery in a clean, dry jewellery box or soft pouch when you are not wearing it. Try to avoid exposing your jewellery to perfumes, creams, hairspray, cleaning products and excessive moisture. It is also a good idea to put your jewellery on after applying cosmetics and perfume rather than before. Regularly wiping your jewellery with a soft cloth can help remove oils and residue from everyday wear.
We recommend removing your jewellery before showering, swimming or bathing. Regular exposure to water, soaps, chlorine and other chemicals can affect sterling silver and may contribute to tarnishing. Swimming pools can be particularly harsh on jewellery because of the chemicals used to treat the water. Moisture can also become trapped around gemstone settings. Removing your jewellery before entering the water is a simple way to help protect its appearance and extend its life.
Jewellery should ideally be stored somewhere clean, dry and away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity. Keeping each piece in a soft pouch or jewellery box can help protect it from scratches and prevent different pieces from rubbing against one another. Sterling silver jewellery can also benefit from being stored in an airtight or low-humidity environment when possible, as this can help slow down tarnishing. Taking a few moments to store your jewellery carefully after wearing it can make a noticeable difference to its long-term appearance.
Some gemstone jewellery can be suitable for regular wear, but the level of care required depends on the type of gemstone and the design of the jewellery. Natural gemstones have different levels of hardness and durability, so some are better suited to everyday wear than others. Even durable gemstones can be affected by knocks, scratches, chemicals and excessive moisture. For this reason, we recommend treating all gemstone jewellery with care and removing it during activities such as exercising, swimming, cleaning or gardening. With thoughtful care, your favourite gemstone pieces can continue to look beautiful for years to come.
Rhodium Plating
Rhodium plating is a popular finish used on sterling silver jewellery to enhance its appearance and provide an additional layer of protection. Rhodium is a precious metal from the platinum family and is known for its bright, reflective appearance. It gives jewellery a clean, polished finish that beautifully complements natural gemstones. Below are some common questions about rhodium plating and how to care for rhodium-plated jewellery.
Rhodium plating is a thin layer of rhodium applied to the surface of jewellery, often over sterling silver. Rhodium is a rare precious metal belonging to the platinum group and is known for its bright, reflective appearance. On sterling silver jewellery, rhodium plating can create a smooth, brilliant finish while helping to protect the underlying silver from everyday exposure. It also provides a beautiful backdrop for natural gemstones, allowing their colours and sparkle to stand out.
Sterling silver may be rhodium plated to give it a bright, polished appearance and an additional protective surface. Rhodium plating can also help reduce direct exposure of the silver to substances that contribute to tarnishing. Its highly reflective finish gives jewellery a clean, contemporary look and works particularly well with gemstone jewellery. Over time, however, rhodium plating can naturally wear with regular use, especially on areas that experience frequent contact.
Rhodium plating can help protect the surface of sterling silver from tarnishing, but it does not make jewellery completely immune to tarnish or wear. Rhodium is applied as a thin surface layer, and this layer can gradually become thinner with regular use. How quickly this happens depends on factors such as how often the jewellery is worn, exposure to moisture and chemicals, and the amount of friction the piece experiences. Proper jewellery care can help maintain the rhodium finish for longer.
The lifespan of rhodium plating can vary depending on how frequently a piece of jewellery is worn and how much contact it has with moisture, chemicals and everyday friction. Jewellery that is worn regularly may gradually show signs of wear on the rhodium surface, particularly on areas that experience the most contact. Pieces that are worn occasionally may retain their rhodium finish for much longer. Taking your jewellery off before swimming, showering, exercising or using household chemicals can help reduce wear and keep the beautiful polished appearance looking its best.
To help preserve the bright finish of rhodium-plated jewellery, handle each piece gently and avoid unnecessary exposure to chemicals, perfumes, cosmetics and moisture. We recommend removing rhodium-plated jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising or doing household cleaning. When you are not wearing it, store the piece separately in a soft pouch or jewellery box to help prevent scratches and friction. For everyday cleaning, gently wipe the jewellery with a soft, clean cloth. Avoid abrasive polishing cloths or harsh cleaning products, as these may wear the rhodium surface more quickly.
